British rule began in India.
Following the Battle of Buxar, on 12th August 1765 an Imperial Durbar was convened by Shah Alam II in which the East India Company (represented by Robert Clive at the Durbar) was granted the Diwani, that is the rights to collect revenue from Bengal, Bihar, as well as Orissa, as well as other aspects of financial and commercial administration, in exchange for an annual tribute of twenty-six lakh Rupees to be paid to the Emperor. this incedent marking the beginning of British rule in India. The actual tripartite Treaty of Allahabad was concluded four days later, on 16th August 1765.
