East Timor’s restoration of independence from Indonesian occupation on May 20, 2002, following a UN-supervised referendum in 1999 where 78.5% of voters chose independence. This ended nearly 25 years of Indonesian rule, which began after a 1975 invasion following Portugal’s withdrawal.
