The Great Bengal Cyclone of 1737 struck the Bengal region, killing an estimated 3.5 lakh people and leaving widespread devastation.
The 1737 Calcutta cyclone, also known as the Hooghly River cyclone or the Great Bengal cyclone, was the first recorded super cyclone in the North Indian Ocean.
Striking between October 9–13, it hit the Bengal coast near Calcutta on the morning of October 11, killing an estimated 350,000 people and causing widespread destruction.
