On 11 May 1888, Jyotirao “Jyotiba” Phule was honored with the title “Mahatma” by social reformer Vithalrao Krishnaji Vandekar in a public meeting held at Koliwada Hall, Mandvi, Mumbai , recognizing his efforts in social reform and fighting against societal evils.
