National Library of India was opened to Public.
The origins of the National Library, Kolkata, can be traced to the establishment of the Calcutta Public Library on 21 March 1836.
The Calcutta Public Library later merged with the Imperial Secretariat Library.
This amalgamation led to the establishment of the Imperial Library.
After India’s Independence, the Imperial Library was renamed the National Library.
The change was effected through the Imperial Library (Change of Name) Act, 1948.
This Act legally replaced the colonial title “Imperial” with “National” and brought the Library under the authority of the Government of India.
