Hindi name of the ‘Council of States’ was adopted as the ‘Rajya Sabha’ in Parliament of India.
On 23August 1954, the Chairman of the Council of States, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishna made an announcement in the Council about the adoption of Hindi name of the Council of States as ‘Rajya Sabha’.
Although the First Lok Sabha had been constituted on 17 April 1952, and both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha held their first sittings on 13 May 1952, the official Hindi names for the two Houses were adopted about two years later.
It is called the Upper House because the Rajya Sabha functions as the second chamber of the Indian Parliament, with the Lok Sabha being the Lower House.
On 28 May 2023, the new Parliament of India building was inaugurated in New Delhi.
On 18 September 2023, the Special Session began in the old building, now called Samvidhan Sadan, with a discussion on parliamentary history.
On 19 September 2023, Both Houses moved to the new building and began proceedings there the same day.
