Tirupati Laddu was introduced as a temple offering.
On 2nd August 1715, The tradition of offering laddus to Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala began.
Over time, this laddu became a famous temple offering.
The Tirupati Laddu has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by UNESCO and also holds patent and trademark rights.
According to inscriptions found in Tiruchanur and the Govindarajaswamy temples, offerings of various prasadam were being made at the Tirumala temple as early as 830 CE.
In 1803, the Madras Presidency started the official sale of temple prasadam.
During the Mahant administration (1843–1933), a sweet boondi offering called “Manoharam” was introduced.
After the establishment of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in 1933, the laddu was formally standardized and became known as the Tirupati Laddu in 1940.
