Volkswagen was formally founded.

On 28 May 1937, Volkswagen was founded in Berlin, Germany, by the German Labour Front under the direction of Adolf Hitler.

The company was originally registered as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH (“Company for the Preparation of the German People’s Car Ltd.”).

On 16 September 1938, the company was renamed Volkswagenwerk GmbH (“People’s Car Factory LLC”).

In 1960, after partial privatization, the company became Volkswagenwerk AG.

On 4 July 1985, the company was officially renamed Volkswagen AG.

The company was originally created to produce an affordable “People’s Car” for ordinary Germans, with the original car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, later evolving into the iconic Volkswagen Beetle.

After World War II, Volkswagen came under British military administration and later grew into one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers.
