World’s first space station ‘Salyut 1’ was launched by the Soviet Union into orbit.
On 19 April 1971, The world’s first space station ‘Salyut-1’ was launched by the Soviet Union. It orbited Earth at an altitude of approximately 200-222 km. Salyut-1 hosted a crew for 23 days (Soyuz 11 mission), marking the first human stay on a space station. The station carried scientific equipment for experiments, including a telescope and spectrometer, but its mission ended tragically when the Soyuz 11 crew died during reentry due to a cabin depressurization. Salyut 1 was deorbited after 175 days in space, burning up over the Pacific Ocean on October 11, 1971.
